Most people acknowledge the importance of minerals such as iron and calcium for our bodies. What about magnesium? Unfortunately, maintaining healthy magnesium levels is often forgotten. Magnesium helps the body regulate over 325 enzymes and plays a critical role in so many bodily functions.
Unfortunately, industrial farming has depleted magnesium from soil, which makes it extremely difficult for us to get enough. Most North Americans are deficient in magnesium, but we have good news! An easy way to increase magnesium in your body is to soak in an Epsom salt bath. Magnesium can easily be absorbed through the skin. Magnesium deficiency can be a contributing factor of heart disease, arthritis, digestive issues, joint pain and more. This is why an Epsom salt bath is so important.
Epsom salts contains two beneficial ingredients: magnesium and sulfate. Research suggests the following health benefits from proper magnesium and sulfate levels:
- Improved heart and circulatory health, prevents hardening of arteries
- Flushes toxins and heavy metals from our cells
- Eases muscle pain
- Improves nerve function by electrolye regulation
- Improves oxygen use in the body
- Improves our abaility to absorb nutrients from food
- Prevents and eases migraine headaches
- Reduces inflammation
- Relaxes the body and eases stress
To prepare an Epsom salt bath, add approximately 2 cups of salt to the bath water. Soak in the water for 15-20 minutes. It is also a great idea to bring a glass of water to drink!
A quick note of caution: If you have high blood pressure, diabetes or a heart or kidney condition, consult with a doctor prior to beginning Epsom salt baths. The information above is intended for general reference purposes only.
